As the State of Hockey, it is no surprise that even the newly formed National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) has Minnesota roots. In July, the NCHC Board of Directors announced that Minnesota native Josh Fenton would be named the conference commissioner. Fenton played a crucial role in the formation and development of the NCHC, joining in on athletic director meetings and assisting in drafting the legal documents necessary to create the conference. Amidst the chaos of his first few months as commissioner, Fenton took time to reflect on the road that led to his new position and addressed the growing trend of players leaving their teams to join the ranks of those in more elite leagues.
